Irish Sea

Introduction

Heysham's three roll-on roll-off berths service the Irish Sea ferry sailings, with routes to Dublin, Eire; to Belfast and Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland; and to Douglas, Isle of Man. Investment in the new Linkspans No 1 and No 3 has increased flexibility.

From the east end of the Port, Norfolk Line operates three freight sailings daily, two to Belfast and one to Dublin. The roll-on roll-off traffic uses two linkspans, which can support up to 120 tonnes and have gradients of no more than 1:8.

A 220 tonne capacity linkspan at the eastern end of the 450 metre long South Quay serves two roll-on roll-off ferry companies operating daily services from Heysham. The Steam Packet Company operates twice daily multi-purpose freight and passenger services to Douglas while Seatruck Ferries sails up to three times a day to Warrenpoint.

For foot pasengers, Heysham is served by a rail link running right to the quayside Passenger Terminal. Trains to and from Heysham link to mainline services at Lancaster and are timed to connect with most daytime sailings.
